At the Crossroads

At the Crossroads

A Sermon by Rev John Haverland

on Jeremiah 6:16

Scripture Readings:

Jer 6:13-30; Phil 3:17-4:9; Mt 7:13-29, 11:25-30

Theme: At a critical time Judah is urged to choose the path of the Lord and to follow him.

Purpose: To emphasise the necessity of choosing to follow the Lord and walk in his ways.

Congregation,

Many of us have had the experience of travelling by car and trying to head for a certain place. As you went on your journey you came to an intersection - to crossroads. The roads went off in different directions. You had to make a decision: should you turn to the right, or turn to the left or should you travel on straight ahead?

You may have had the same experience when you were out tramping (bush walking). You came to a fork in the track. It was not clear from the track markers which route you should follow. Should you take the track that went to the left or that going to the right?

Christ Alone

Christ Alone

A Sermon by Rev Martin Geluk

on John 14:6

Scripture Readings:

John 8:12-30; 14:6-11

Congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We have dealt with the 'Scripture alone teaching', which was the first of the five 'solas' from the Reformation. We now begin to look at the next 'sola', which is 'Christ alone'.

So what does the Bible say when it speaks about salvation? Does it say that belonging to the church of Rome and being greatly involved with it will save you? Does the Bible say that in order to be saved you must unquestioningly submit to the teaching of popes, cardinals, and priests? Does the Bible say that regular participation in the sacraments can save you? Yes, said the Roman Catholic Church in the days of Luther and Calvin. The church, the clergy, the sacraments were all said to be vital to your salvation.

Christianity Vs Islam - what’s the difference?

Christianity Vs Islam -

what's the difference?

A Sermon by Rev Bill Bosker

Scripture Reading:

Gen 15:1-7; Rom 4:1-8, 13-25; Rom 3:21-26

Dear Congregation.

Introduction:

I think we all agree the world is a different place after September 11, 2001. If we hadn't thought about Islam and the Muslim faith before then, we do now. Islam is attractive to millions of people because it has a world-view where all of life is religion. Does that ring any bells for you?

Rev Victor Attallah of Middle East Reformed Fellowship (MERF), says that when Muslims hear a true biblical and Reformed world and life view, it makes some sense to them, because all of life is lived under God and we exist for God's glory.

My King Rules!

My King Rules!

A Sermon by Rev Sjirk Bajema

on Heidelberg Catechism Lord's Day 19

Scripture Reading:

Psalm 110; Colossians 1:15-23

Congregation...

At first sight, it might seem that Lord's Day 19 doesn't hold together very well. We may wonder why the article in the Apostles' Creed about Jesus being seated at the right hand of God is "lumped in" with the article about Him coming back to judge the living and the dead. What is the connection between the two articles?

Just think a little more about this: What does Jesus have to be in order to sit at His Father's right hand, and what does he have to be to be able to come to judge the living and the dead at the end of this time? What position does He need to occupy to fulfil both these actions?
